Arcane Mage Mythic+ Guide (2024)

Welcome to the Arcane Mage Mythic+guide for the World of Warcraft prepatch 11.0.1! In this guide, you can find tips and tricks to maximize your damage output and ensure your character is ready to top the damage charts.

Touch of the Magi accumulates 20% of the damage of your abilities, such as Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles. Managing Touch of the Magi correctly allows you to deal a great amount of damage in a short time.

Arcane Mage is also unique in the fact that it has to manage mana. That's right, Arcane Mage is the only damage dealer who relies on mana to do damage as well as having a rotation! Don't worry though, you are NOT a healer. Familiarize yourself with different talent builds in this guide and their situational advantages to ensure you are always prepared for the unexpected.

Whether you're new to the spec or want to improve your play, you can find the information needed to perform at your best in Mythic+ environments.

MOBILITY

Excelllent

  • Arcane Mage's are known for their burst damage windows through Arcane Surge and Touch of the Magi. These two spells end up shaping the rotation as we know it.
  • Their toolkit includes defensive abilities like Ice Cold and Alter Time. These spells alone do not contribute to Arcane Mages having great survivability though, they have three more defensives to choose from!
  • However, like any specialization, Arcane Mages have their weaknesses. Two notable drawbacks are their reliance on mana and precise casting sequences during Touch of the Magi windows.
  • This trade-off makes it difficult to maintain optimal performance in encounters that require frequent precise movements or extended fights, potentially impacting their overall effectiveness.

Talents

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Arcane Mage

General

When to use this Spec

This is the main spec used by Arcane Mage's in Mythic+. This should be your default talent tree.

Gameplay Altering Talents

Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation and Deep Dive sections below.

Spec Tree

  • Arcane Surge
    • This is your major cooldown as an Arcane Mage. Granting you massive spell power and mana regeneration.
  • Touch of the Magi --- 45 Second Cooldown
    • This is your major cooldown and most of the rotation revolves around maximizing your Touch of the Magi windows.
  • High Voltage
    • The current rotation revolves around Arcane Barraging very frequently and High Voltage is an important aspect of building your arcane charges back up.
  • Orb Barrage
    • Reacting and playing around this proc is very important in Cleave and AoE scenarios to not lose potential Arcane Charges.
  • Magi's Spark
    • In most cases this talent is completely passive, just remember in AoE situations you need to cast Arcane Blast at least once during your Touch of the Magi window.
  • Aether Attunement
    • It is important in single target to not cancel these missiles early. In AoE you can expect lots of arcane charges and Arcane Harmony stacks when you press this.
  • Arcing Cleave
    • A majority of your cleave/AoE comes from this talent. Be sure to make good use of your Arcane Barrage

Class Tree

  • Shifting Power
    • This spell is used after your cooldowns to get them back quicker.
  • Spellsteal
    • There are a lot of mechanics you can Spellsteal to gain their benefit.
  • Time Anomaly
    • Be ready to react to the procs you get from this talent, they can impact your rotation differently depending on when they proc.
  • Mass Barrier
    • Make sure to use Mass Barrier to help your dungeon teammates out.
  • Shimmer
    • This talent node is the main reason mage in general has such high mobility. Being castable while casting and off the GCD, it is essential you manage your Shimmer well to achieve 100% uptime on DPS during any encounter.

Rotation

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Arcane Mage

Tier Set

  • 2-Set: For each Arcane Charge, Arcane Blast critical strike chance is increased by 5% and Arcane Explosion critical strike chance is increased by 3%.
  • 4-Set: When Arcane Blast or Arcane Explosion critically strikes at least one target, the critical strike chance of your next Arcane Barrage is increased by 10%, stacking up to 4 times.

During pre-patch, our tier set gets reverted back to S1 Dragonflight's tier set. It is very basic and does not change your rotation in any meaningful way. You can treat it as completely passive and never think about it.

Single Target

Arcane Mage is unique when it comes to rotation as along with a normal rotation priority, it also has mana! Some of the rotation revolves around conserving mana and a different priority when your mana is very low. Other than this, your cooldown progression throughout the fight should look like this.

Opener - Big Burn - Mini Burn - Big Burn - Mini Burn - etc...

Between burns you want to conserve mana to have enough mana to complete a Mini Burn.

Prepull / Opener Rotation

The goal of the opener is to reach 4 arcane charges and then enter your Touch of the Magi window.

  • It is important to note that Touch of the Magi is off the GCD. You should time your Touch of the Magi so it is applied slightly before Arcane Barrage hits the target.
  • Evocation is casted 5 seconds before the pull happens.
  • Arcane Blast is casted 2 seconds before the pull happens.

Priority

  1. Cast Shifting Power after your Arcane Surge and Evocation expires.
  2. Cast Arcane Orb when you have less than 2 Arcane Charges.
  3. Cast Arcane Blast into Arcane Barrage with 1 stack of Nether Precision IF you have either, a Clearcasting or an Arcane Orb available to cast.
  4. Cast Arcane Blast with 2 stacks of Nether Precision.
  5. Cast Arcane Missles with Clearcasting.
  6. Cast Arcane Blast.
  7. Cast Arcane Barrage.

Multi Target

You enter the Multi Target rotation when 3 or more mobs are present.

Opener Rotation

  • It is important to note that Touch of the Magi is off the GCD. You should time your Touch of the Magi so it is applied slightly before Arcane Barrage hits the target.
  • Skip the Arcane Orb if you are already at 4 Arcane Charges.
  • Evocation is casted 5 seconds before the pull happens.

Priority

  1. Cast Shifting Power after your Arcane Surge and Evocation expires.
  2. Cast Arcane Blast once during Touch of the Magi to proc Magi's Spark.
  3. Cast Arcane Barrage if at 4 arcane charges.
  4. Cast Arcane Missles with Clearcasting.
  5. Cast Arcane Orb if you have less than 4 arcane charges.
  6. Cast Arcane Explosion.

Deep Dive

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Arcane Mage

Mana Management

You ideally want to have around 50% mana when entering your mini burn. You can enter your big burn with 0% mana as Arcane Surge gives you all of your mana back. Arcane Barrage is used when you have 0% mana and cannot cast an Arcane Blast or you are trying to conserve mana.

Clipping Arcane Missles vs Not Clipping

  • Clipping refers to intentionally canceling your Arcane Missles channel in order to cast another spell.
  • It was a very common strategy to clip every Arcane Missles as you mainly wanted the Nether Precision buff you got from consuming Clearcasting. The spell itself did not do very much damage but a lot has changed moving into The War Within. We still do not have a complete understanding of the best builds or rotation but, some involve clipping every Arcane Missles you cast and some clip only in certain circ*mstances. For example, if you play without the talent High Voltage, you clip every Arcane Missles you cast. If you play with High Voltage, you only clip when you are at 4 arcane charges. In Aoe however, you clip every Arcane Missles you cast regardless of having this talent or not.

Orb Barrage Minmaxing

There are several tips you can use to maximize your Orb Barrage efficiency in AoE scenarios. These tricks are referred to as, "Gucci Barrage" and "7-10 Split".

DISCLAIMER: These tricks are highly technical and mechanically taxing. I do not recommend trying these tips unless you are proficient at Arcane Mage already.

Gucci Barrage

The Gucci Barrage refers to not wasting the Orb Barrage proc you could potentially receive when casting your Arcane Barrage and Touch of the Magi combo.

In a normal scenario, you are in melee range and if Orb Barrage procs, you waste the arcane charges from the proc.

To avoid this, stand 20+ yards away (this distance depends on your haste, the higher your haste, the closer you can stand) and do the normal Arcane Barrage and Touch of the Magi combo. If your Orb Barrage procs, send another 4 charge Arcane Barrage before the procced orb reaches the targets.

If the Orb Barrage talent procs, your opener should look like this.

7-10 Split

The 7-10 split refers to casting multiple fully charged Arcane Barrages with a singular Arcane Orb. This is only usable when there are 8 or more targets. The difficulty is dependent on how stacked the mobs present are. The looser the stack, the easier it is to use this trick. You can achieve this when the mobs are almost fully stacked but it is extremely difficult.

You can achieve this majestic feat by first having an Arcane Orb headed towards 8 or more targets. When the Arcane Orb hits 4 enemies, send a Arcane Barrage before the Arcane Orb damages the rest of the enemies. You should stand around 20+ yards from the mobs (this distance depends on your haste, the higher your haste, the closer you can stand) in order to not lose globals waiting for the Arcane Orb to hit the targets.

Here is a clip from S2 Dragonflight showcasing this very well. Even though it is a previous patch, the concept is the same as Orb Barrages has not changed.

As you can see, the mobs are fairly stacked and every global during Touch of the Magi is filled with fully charged Arcane Barrages even when getting average procs.

Understanding Mechanics

Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

Boss Tips

Hackclaw's War-Band

  • Always Alter Time whenever Gash Frenzy by Gashtooth is being cast to completely negate the boss mechanic.
  • In case your tank is still hexed or dead and Savage Charge is on you, then it's possible to dodge it with properly timed Blink or Shimmer.
  • Make sure to have damage prepared for Hextrick Totem to break it as fast as possible.
  • Save your Mirror Image for the Hextrick Totem spawn. This allows you to get some extra time to break your tank and healer out of the CC while the boss is running after your Images.

Gutshot

  • Help your team control the hyenas with Frost Nova and other slows if you are failing to utilize boss traps on them.

Treemouth

  • Blast Wave and Dragon's Breath should be used to stop the slimes that spawn from Decay Spray before they complete their Gushing Ooze cast. Otherwise, your group can completely wipe.

Decatriarch Wratheye

  • Make sure to have damage prepared by alternating Arcane Surge and Touch of the Magi for Rotburst Totem to break it as fast as possible.
  • Rotate defensives on Withered Eruption. Generally just a Prismatic Barrier is enough to live.

Trash Tips

  • Make sure to stop Vicious Clawmangle from Claw Fighter's with any of your available stops.

Boss Tips

The Lost Dwarves

  • Put Olaf on focus to quickly interrupt his Defensive Bulwark when casted. Otherwise, he will shield his allies and give them damage reduction while the shield lasts.
  • Ricocheting Shield can be cancelled by casting Greater Invisibility. Be careful as it will be instantly re-casted on another member of your group. This should only be done as a last resort.

Bromach

  • Make sure to have damage prepared for Quaking Totem to break it as fast as possible to limit your group's damage intake.

Talondras

  • Use defensives while you're affected by Earthen Shards, especially if Crushing Stomp is coming up.

Emberon

  • Rotate your defensive abilities for every cast of Unstable Embers, especially those overlapping with the Burning Heat debuff.

Deios

  • Due to Energized Barriers, Time Sink can be removed by Prismatic Barrier or Mass Barrier.
  • Rotate through Alter Time, Ice Cold, Greater Invisibility and Mirror Image to cover every Wing Buffet cast.

Trash Tips

  • Cast Spellsteal on Hasten for extra haste. Spellsteal can also be used on Earthen Ward for a giant absorb shield.
  • Remember that you can Remove Curse Curse of Stone to avoid the stun and the following imminent death.

Boss Tips

Granyth

  • Be prepared to cast Polymorph on a Nokhud Saboteur as it is a common strategy to prevent him from casting Dismantle. Keep in mind that you will need to keep that mob polymorphed throughout the encounter.

Raging Tempest

  • Maximizing Surge of Power stacks is crucial to have an easier time on this encounter since Surge of Power doesn't only buff damage, but also healing absorbs. Using Prismatic Barrier with 10 stacks guarantees that you survive with ease, especially if you time it correctly with the bosses Electrical Storm.

Teera & Maruuk

  • Make sure to save Alter Time in case you get a shoot casted on you before Gale Arrow. This alleviates the pressure placed on your healer from quickly trying to top your health before Gale Arrow lands.
  • Rotate through a combination of Prismatic Barrier, Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility to live every Gale Arrow.

Balakar Khan

  • Iron Spear and Static Spear can be cancelled with Greater Invisibility if targeted on you. Make sure to use it when the boss is casting the spell on you and not when you are first targeted.
  • Make sure to rotate a defensives for each Static Spear and Upheaval cast.

Trash Tips

  • Swift Stab is casted on the furthest target and can be dodged with high movement speed or teleports like Blink and Shimmer.
  • Make sure to stop Rally the Clan with Dragon's Breath or Blast Wave.
  • You can Spellsteal Swirling Gusts for a huge absorb shield. Ideally you want to save these shields for the boss so it is important that you and your group do not run into them while fighting the packs around the boss area.

Boss Tips

Overgrown Ancient

  • Use a defensive on every Burst Forth cast that happens at 100 energy of the boss.
  • You should use Ice Block without Ice Cold. This allows you to remove the Splinterbark debuff.

Crawth

  • Deafening Screech happens roughly every 23 seconds. Be sure to plan your defensive abilities accordingly.
  • Another encounter where playing Ice Block without Ice Cold allows you to remove Deafening Screech stacks. This lets you essentially live for a very long time before you need to reset your stacks.

Vexamus

  • Mana Bomb is the major damage event during the fight. You should plan your defensives around this.
  • Sometimes Mana Bomb can overlap with Arcane Fissure cast, you ideally should have a big defensive planned like Ice Block or Greater Invisibility to handle this overlap.

Trash Tips

  • You can line of sight the Vicious Ambush cast from the Arcane Ravager. The cast will always target the furthest away player and running out of line of sight causes the Arcane Ravager to not charge to you. Instead it immediately start its Riftbreath cast.
  • You can Spellsteal the Celestial Shield of Ethereal Restorer's to gain a shield that grants you haste while it persists.

Boss Tips

Gulping Goliath

  • Help your team control the Curious Swoglets with any of your CC spells available like Blast Wave and Cone of Cold.

Khajin

  • Do your best to not overlap your defensive abilities with your healer cooldowns. This fight is entirely reliant on playing defensively and making sure your healer can handle the pressure so be sure to help them out.

Primal Tsunami

  • Always have a defensive for every Tempest's Fury.
  • You can use Polymorph on 1 of the 4 Primalist Infuser's to interrupt them without them starting to cast Inundate. This also prevents the boss from gaining stacks early on while keeping the enemy controlled.

Trash Tips

  • Use Prismatic Barrier to cleanse yourself from Deep Chill while fighting any Proto-Dragon. This is possible thanks to the Energized Barriers talent.
  • You can outrange the Inundate cast of Infuser Sariya by standing over 40 yards away.

Boss Tips

Leymor

  • Rotate through a combination of Prismatic Barrier, Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility to live each Consuming Stomp cast.

Telash Greywing

  • Make sure to use a defensive ability when targeted by Icy Devastator.
  • Rotate through a combination of Prismatic Barrier, Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility to live each Absolute Zero cast.

Umbrelskul

  • Defensives should be used during the Detonating Crystals phases.

Trash Tips

  • You can Spellsteal Arcane Fury to get a 35% damage increase. Be careful to not go out of mana by Spellstealing too much.
  • One of the important interrupts in this dungeon is Icy Bindings from the Rune Seal Keeper. Since it's usually paired with other adds that spawn void zones under your feet that you can't dodge if you're rooted.

Boss Tips

Magmatusk

  • Use defensives for each Volatile Mutation casted.
  • The Lava Spray cast can be cancelled with Greater Invisibility.

Chargath, Bane of Scales

  • Alter Time can be used for every Grounding Spear. Be careful to position yourself properly so once you use Alter Time you are also out of fire from the spear.
  • If you're a Dwarf, you can remove the bleed from Dragon Strike with Stoneform if necessary.
    • You can bait Dragon Strike on the furthest player from the target. This means that your tank should take most of them, but you can bait some of them to go on you since you will be prepared to tank it.

Forgemaster Gorek

  • Might of the Forge happens close to Blazing Aegis which is very deadly. You should use your defensives pre-emptively during the Might of the Forge cast.
  • Might of the Forge can be fully cancelled by pressing Greater Invisibility if you are the one targeted by the mechanic.

Warlord Sargha

  • Remember that you can pick up multiple Piles of Gold to stack up more than one useable item.
  • Remove Curse should be used to remove Curse of the Dragon Hoard from yourself or your teammates.

Trash Tips

  • Keep an eye out for Qalashi Bonesplitter's Dragonbone Axe ability and disrupt it with your available toolkit.

Boss Tips

Melidrussa Chillworn

  • At 75% and 45%, Melidrussa spawns tons of Infused Whelps that can be used for funneling damage on the boss.
  • Defensives should generally be used for each Chillstorm cast.

Kokia Blazehoof

  • Rotate defensives for each Inferno cast.
  • Ritual of Blazebinding can kill your Mirror Images so make sure to cast the spell either outside of the explosion or right after.

Erkhart Stormvein / Kyrakka

  • Winds of Change rotates counterclockwise from its starting point.
  • Defensives are generally not needed in Phase 1. In Phase 2 on the other hand, use a personal every time you get hit by Flamespit as it is extremely deadly.

Trash Tips

  • You can Spellsteal Burning Ambition to get a haste buff but, be careful since it also increases your damage taken by quite a bit.
  • Living Bomb can be utilized to damage and knock up trash mobs.
  • Watch out for Tectonic Slam and Flame Dance and help your group with stopping them.

Affixes

Learn how to effectively handle various Mythic+ Affixes as a Destruction Warlock. Depending on the level of the Mythic+ Dungeon you face up to two additional Affixes alongside Fortified and Tyrannical.

  • Entangling
    • Energized Barriers lets you remove Entangling completely by casting Prismatic Barrier.
    • Both Ice Floes & Shimmer are great mobility tools to get out of Entangling.
  • Incorporeal
    • Polymorph
  • Afflicted
    • Remove Curse
  • Volcanic
    • Ice Floes is a great tool to handle this affix.
  • Spiteful
    • Slow them with Blast Wave & Cone of Cold.
    • Talent into Ring of Frost if this affix is a big problem for your group.
  • Sanguine
    • Volatile Detonation is a great tool to knock mobs out of Sanguine.

Tertiary

  • Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
  • Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing.
  • Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

Races

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Arcane Mage

For min-maxing a Arcane Mage in Mythic+, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.

  • Stoneform -- Dwarf
    • One of the most potent racials in Mythic+ currently and historically.
    • Use-cases:
      • Bursting stacks.
      • Splinterbark on Overgrown Ancient (Algeth'ar Academy).
      • Deep Chill from Glacial Proto-Dragons (Halls of Infusion).
      • Withering from Fetid Rotsingers and Brackenhide Shapers (Brackenhide Hollow).
      • Earthen Shards from Sentinel Talondras (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr).
      • Stolen Time from Infinite Timereavers (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr).
      • Dragon Strike from Chargath (Neltharus).
      • Bold Ambush from Qalashi Hunters (Neltharus).
  • Shadowmeld -- Night Elf
    • Also one of the most potent racials in Mythic+ historically.
    • Use-cases:
      • Cast Shadowmeld when Forgemaster Gorek (Neltharus) targets you with Blazing Aegis, this completely negate the mechanic for you and the rest of the group.
      • Run past basically any mob and then cast Shadowmeld to make them reset. Even works on mobs that have stealth detection if you get enough distance before you Shadowmeld.
  • Escape Artist -- Gnome
    • Free yourself from roots.
  • Rocket Jump -- Goblin
    • Do a small jump in the direction your character is facing.
    • While you're in the Rocket Jump animation you are placed on a global cooldown until your character lands.

Recommendation

Even if Dwarf and Night Elf aren't the overall best racials in terms of DPS but their abilities have such a big impact on your Mythic+ experience that you need to use either of them if you're serious about pushing keys with your Arcane Mage.
