Destruction Warlock Raid Guide (2024)

Welcome to theDestruction Warlock Raidguide for the World of Warcraft prepatch 11.0! In this guide, you can find tips and tricks to maximize your output and ensure your character is ready to top the charts!

Your primary resource is Soul Shards which don't work like Affliction's or Demonology's counterparts despite having the same name. In this spec, you generate them as Soul Shard fragments, 10 Soul Shard fragments build 1 full Soul Shard. This means that you have a steady flow of Soul Shard fragments coming in throughout the fight which smoothes out your rotation.

In the current season, you also have a chance to gain Chaos Maelstrom by spending Soul Shards while all your critical strikes deal 212% more damage instead of the usual 200% if you have your full tierset equipped.

Whether you're new to the spec or want to improve your play, you can find the information needed to perform at your best in raid environments. Get ready to unleash your chaos!

Subpar

  • Destruction Warlocks are known for their exceptional cleave damage thanks to Havoc.
  • Rain of Fire in conjunction with Inferno or Cataclysm grants you decent AoE capabilities but the overall damage itself is currently quite low compared to other classes.
  • Ritual of Summoning and Soulstone provide quick wipe recovery while Create Soulwell and Curse of Weakness aide your raid group with decent defensive utility.
  • Their toolkit includes great defensives like Unending Resolve, Dark Pact and Soul Leech, which allows them to take a great amount of damage without being punished too harshly.
  • One of their weakness is their lack of mobility. Burning Rush does help but became harder/more punishing to use after the nerf to Fiendish Stride.

  • Roaring Blaze
    • It is crucial to keep this buff active as much as possible through proper Conflagrate usage.
  • Cataclysm
    • Another way of dealing upfront damage and refreshing Immolate at the same time.
  • Soul Fire
    • A hard hitting spell which is amplified by Roaring Blaze, it is also further enhanced by Decimation.
  • Ritual of Ruin
    • Passively nets you free Chaos Bolt casts and also spawns an Overfiend that generates more Soul Shards.
  • Channel Demonfire
    • Medium damage on a short cooldown which increases Immolate duration because of Raging Demonfire.
  • Summon Infernal
    • Your main cooldown for burst windows, this is enhanced by Crashing Chaos.

Class Tree

  • Soulburn
    • Enhances multiple utility spells, mainly used together with Demonic Circle: Teleport, Healthstone, Demonic Gateway and Drain Life.
  • Sweet Souls
    • Only works if other people use the Healthstones that you created.

Single-Target

Single Target Opener Rotation

  • Your goal is to spend as many Soul Shards as possible without wasting resources, while also keeping relevant abilities on cooldown. Below, you see an example of how your opener looks like using the recommended Single-Target talent spec and depending on the number of Soul Conduit procs, among other factors:
  • Always cast Immolate unless it was already applied by either Soul Fire or Cataclysm.
  • Use your active trinkets, Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power and racials like Blood Fury or Berserking after using Summon Infernal.

Priority List

This is a general priority you aim to maintain throughout the fight.

  1. Keep up Immolate on your target.
  2. Cast Chaos Bolt if you are capping on Soul Shards.
  3. Cast Conflagrate to keep up Roaring Blaze, or if you have 2 stacks.
  4. Cast Soul Fire with Decimation up.
  5. Cast Chaos Bolt to keep up Eradication.
  6. CastSoul Fire if you're not overcapping on Soul Shards and have Backdraft up.

  8. Cast Conflagrate to generate Soul Shards.
  9. Cast Incinerate to generate Soul Shards.

Multi-Target

2+ Target Opener Rotation

  • Below, you see an example of how your opener looks like using the recommended Multi-Target talent spec and depending on the number of Soul Conduit procs, among other factors.
  • Always cast Immolate on targets that live for over 9 seconds unless it was already applied by Cataclysm or Soul Fire.
  • Use your active trinkets, Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power, and racials like Blood Fury or Berserking after using Summon Infernal.

2+ Target Priority List

  1. Keep up Immolate on both targets.
  2. Cast Havoc on a secondary target.
  3. Cast Chaos Bolt if you are capping on Soul Shards.
  4. Cast Conflagrate to keep up Roaring Blaze, or if you have 2 stacks.
  5. Cast Soul Fire with Decimation up.
  6. Cast Chaos Bolt to keep up Eradication.
  7. Cast Soul Fire if you're not overcapping on Soul Shards.
  8. Cast Conflagrate to generate Soul Shards.
  9. Cast Incinerate to generate Soul Shards.

3+ Targets Opener Rotation

  • This opener can vary by a lot depending on your Soul Shards generation. Below you see one variation of an opener on 4 targets assuming that you're playing the‍Infernotalent and the recommendedAoE talent spec.
  • Always cast Immolate on targets that live for over 9 seconds unless it was already applied by Cataclysm or Soul Fire.
  • Use your active trinkets, Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power, and racials like Blood Fury or Berserking after using Summon Infernal.

3+ Target Priority List

  1. Keep up Immolate on targets that last over 9 seconds.
  2. Cast Rain of Fire if you are about to cap on Soul Shards.

Deep dive

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Destruction Warlock

Using Rain of Fire vs. Chaos Bolt

The way you spend Soul Shards varies based on the number of targets you're fighting and whether Havoc is active or not.

Currently it is worth to cast Rain of Fire on single-target because of pre-patch interactions and weird scaling for Chaos Bolt when you're not using a talent spec that is catered towards Chaos Bolt.

Otherwise, the general rules are as follows:

  • You use Chaos Bolt if
    • Targets are constantly moving out of your potential Rain of Fire area.
    • You want to focus your damage on a priority target within a group of enemies.
    • You fight fewer than 3 enemies without Havoc active, or up to 5 enemies while Havoc is active.
  • You use Rain of Fire if
    • Moving or disrupted through other means as well as when you have a high rate of Soul Shard generation.
    • You fight 3 or more enemies without Havoc active, or over 5 enemies while Havoc is active.

Single-Target Rain of Fire variation

Check out the Single-Target Rain of Fire variation in the Talent section.

  • You want to pay attention to the following things:
    • Cast as many Rain of Fire spells during Rain of Chaos as possible.
    • Only cast Chaos Bolt while Ritual of Ruin is up otherwise use Rain of Fire.
    • Keep up Roaring Blaze on your target.
    • Cast Soul Fire on cooldown except if you would overcap on Soul Shards.
  • Below, you see an example of how your opener looks like using the Single-Target Rain of Fire variation spec.
  • This is not a fixed rotation; This variation deals with more RNG than other builds due to Rain of Chaos and using Rain of Fire as the main spender.

Maximizing your Havoc

To maximize your damage while Havoc is active you need to spend as many casts on Chaos Bolt or Rain of Fire as possible. For this to happen you should enter the Havoc window with as many of the following conditions as possible:

  • A high amount of Soul Shards or Soul Shard income.
  • Conflagrate should be close to 2 stacks.
  • Refresh Immolates so they won't drop off during your Havoc window.
  • Pre-build Ritual of Ruin stacks.

Below is an example of what happens when you correctly manage your Havoc window.

  • This is not a fixed rotation; This is just one example of how to play during your Havoc window. Soul Conduit procs, critical hits and Soul Fire resets can increase your Soul Shard generation, allowing you to spend more Soul Shards on Chaos Bolt or Rain of Fire.

Conflagrate, Backdraft and Roaring Blaze

  • Make sure to space out your Conflagrates to ensure a high uptime on Roaring Blaze.
  • Use your Backdraft charges on Soul Fire then Chaos Bolt and otherwise on Incinerate.
  • Don't cast Soul Fire or Channel Demonfire without Roaring Blaze present on your target.

Min-maxing Eradication

  • Your casted spell still gets the benefit from Eradication if it finishes before the previous Eradication fades from the target.
  • You aim to have a consistent uptime of Eradication to maximize your damage output.

Below, you find an example of how to correctly manage the Eradication timing assuming it takes the Chaos Bolt 2 seconds to reach its target.

Understanding Mechanics

Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

  • Pandemic
  • Spell Queue Window
  • Stat Diminishing Returns

Offensive Cooldown Usage

Boss Tips

  • You can immune Icy Shroud and Frozen Shroud if you use Soulburn together with Demonic Circle: Teleport.
  • Cast Havoc on the boss for more damage when the adds are dying too quickly.
  • While fighting Flamebenders you can purge them with Devour Magic after they cast Cauterizing Flashflames to remove their HoT effect.
  • In Phase 2 you need to ensure that your Demonic Circle is not near anyone before you immune Frozen Shroud since it often overlaps with Wildfire which you don't want to spread to anyone.
  • Instead of using Soulburn together with Demonic Circle: Teleport you can also use Singe Magic to dispel yourself or an ally.
  • Utilizing Mortal Coil and Dark Pact while having high stacks of Wildfire and Empowered Greatstaff of the Broodkeeper going off is a good way to keep yourself healthy.

Defensive Cooldown Usage

Utility Cooldown Usage

Boss Tips

  • Playing Howl of Terror over Mortal Coil helps the Raid stop Sparks from Volatile Current.
  • Shadowfury and Darkfury helps with stopping even more Sparks from Volatile Current.

Phase 1

  • Call for an external or use one of your defensives if you're directly affected by Static Charge.
  • Pre-use Burning Rush before Hurricane Wing to negate some of the pushback effect.

Phase 2

  • Use Soulburn Demonic Circle: Teleport right before a Fulminating Charge is applied to avoid the movement speed impairment.
  • Dark Pact is buffed while you're benefiting off of Focused Charge increasing its absorb by 200%.

Defensive Cooldown Usage

Boss Tips

  • Always use Havoc on the Boss while a Voice from Beyond add is up!
  • Pre-place a Demonic Circle to quickly teleport back whenever you get targeted by Rushing Darkness or Volcanic Heart.

Offensive Cooldown Usage

Defensive Cooldown Usage

Boss Tips

  • Use your Dark Pact when 8 seconds are left on the pull timer to have it ready at 37 seconds into the fight again. That way you absorb a lot of the damage at the start of the encounter for free.
  • You can pre-place a Demonic Circle in front of the location where your Raid is gathering for the P1 intermission to quickly collect Astral Flares and use Demonic Circle: Teleport to get back to the gathering point before your Void Bomb expires. This gives you extra time to collect more Astral Flares.
    • Preferably you collect 2 of the 3 Mind Fragments and then wait at 9 Astral Flare stacks, refreshing them to 10 right before collecting your third Mind Fragment. This ensures that you have maximum uptime of the haste buff while being able to damage the Boss.
    • Click here to see a video of min-maxing your Astral Flares.
  • After Phase 2 concludes remember to put your Demonic Circle into the middle of the room, this enables you to quickly useDemonic Circle: Teleport if you mess up and fall through a Dimensional Puncture in the ground.
  • If you're assigned to deal with Void Bombs you should probably save your Dark Pact for those timings instead.

Offensive Cooldown Usage

2min variant

3min variant

Boss Tips

  • You play Ichor of Devils over Frequent Donor because you want to use Dark Pact every time you soak the Brand of Damnation.
    • This doesn’t occur faster than 1 minute thus Ichor of Devils has more value than Frequent Donor.
  • Pre-pull, place a Demonic Circle away from the location where you're going to be baiting Lava Geysers to save important globals later.
  • Use Irideus Fragment instead of Nymue's Unraveling Spindle if you're going with the 3 minute variant.

Offensive Cooldown Usage

Defensive Cooldown Usage

Boss Tips

  • You can immune Mass Entanglement if you use Soulburn together with Demonic Circle: Teleport.
  • You can help out your healer team with Singe Magic and dispel Fiery Growth. Don't randomly start doing this! Talk to them first!
  • Placing a Demonic Gateway after Mass Entanglement helps people to get out quickly before the Fire Beam explodes!

Offensive Cooldown Usage

Boss Tips

  • Dispel Aflame applied from Burning Presence on cooldown with Singe Magic even if it's not on yourself. Helps to significantly reduce the raid damage.

Phase 1

  • Place a Demonic Circle pre-pull towards the middle of the room to save globals when running away from Dream Rend later in the fight.
  • Always use Dark Pact after Darkflame Shades for the Wildfire & Fyr'alath's Flame combo in Phase 1.
  • When the boss goes into the Intermission from Phase 1 place a Demonic Gateway and use it to negate the knock-up effect of Incarnate.

Phase 2

  • After the Flamefall starting in Phase 2 place a Demonic Circle in the middle of the room facing away from the Heart of Amirdrassil. After Shadow Cage and Shadowflame Devastation go out use Demonic Circle: Teleport to give other people room while everybody is afflicted by Blaze.
  • Shadowfury can be used to disrupt Searing Screams while the Screaming Souls are gathered up.

Phase 3

  • In Phase 3 it is vital to place a Demonic Circle before Swirling Firestorm goes out to be able to quickly drop your Seed of Amirdrassil on the ground. Place the Swirling Firestorm outside and pick up your Seed of Amirdrassil before it can get hit by Eternal Firestorm.

Stat Priority

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Destruction Warlock

Understand your secondary stat priority and the tertiary stats needed for optimal performance during Raid boss fights as a Destruction Warlock. For more detailed information, visit the Stats and Attributes guide.

Higher Item level items are better in most scenarios. For an accurate representation of what item to equip you should use Simcraft! A static "Stat Priority" is just a starting point and can easily shift depending on your individual gear.

  • All secondary stats are affected by diminishing returns. Click here to learn more!

Tertiary

  • Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
  • Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing. The damage of your pets does not heal you thus Leech is a great tertiary for you since most of your damage is coming from your own spells.
  • Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

Trinkets

Below you can find active and passive alternatives to the recommended trinkets. Do note that some trinkets are better than others depending on the scenario.

Active Trinket alternatives

  • Spoils of Neltharus
    • Alternates between the secondaries, the use can be delayed a little bit until your preferred secondary is available.
  • Irideus Fragment
    • The best option if you're delaying your Summon Infernal for 1 minute because of boss timings.
  • Desperate Invoker's Codex
    • Decent upfront damage. Make sure you don't suffer from any debuff that amplifies nature damage before using this trinket.
  • Ashes of the Embersoul
    • Strong 2 minute on use with a minute haste penalty after.

Passive Trinket alternatives

  • Umbrelskul's Fractured Heart
    • Very strong single-target damage while still doing respectable AoE damage
  • Whispering Incarnate Icon
    • Is better or worse depending on how many people in your Raid are using it.
  • Ominous Chromatic Essence
    • Is better or worse depending on how many people in your Raid are using it.
  • Vessel of Searing Shadow
    • Solid single-target trinket, loses significant value on AoE.

Embellishments

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Destruction Warlock

  • 2x Blue Silken Lining
    • It is a good choice if you have over 90% health most of the time and during your cooldowns.
    • The optimal slots to craft on are Wrists, Boots, Waist, or Cloak depending on your available gear.

or

  • 2x Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch
    • Use Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch instead of Blue Silken Lining if you're below 90% health for a considerable amount of time throughout the fight.
    • The optimal slots to craft on are Wrists, Boots, Waist, or Cloak depending on your available gear.

Honorable mention

  • Allied Wristguards of Time Dilation
    • Provides less personal DPS but more overall DPS for your Raid.
    • Combine it with 1x Blue Silken Lining or Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch.
  • Elemental Lariat
    • Good to use if you have access to the maximum amount of gems, and decent in multi-target scenarios especially if you're Blue Silken Lining uptime is not great.

Remaining Sparks

  • Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped.
  • Crafted items are 525 item level and regular items are 528 on max item level, therefore, it's not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your 2x embellishments unless you don't have access to other high item level gear on that slot.

Races

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Destruction Warlock

For min-maxing a Destruction Warlock in raiding, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.

  • Stoneform -- Dwarf
    • Can dispel Magic and Bleed debuffs. Has been useful in the past on some bosses with Bleeds.
  • Rocket Jump -- Goblin
    • Do a small jump in the direction your character is facing.
    • While you're in the Rocket Jump animation you are placed on a global cooldown until your character lands.
  • Berserking -- Troll
    • Strong DPS racial but lines up poorly with Summon Infernal.
    • Reduce the duration of movement impairing effects by 20%. This was only useful once in the recent history of progression raiding but is still worth noting.
  • Blood Fury -- Orc
    • Strong racial for damage because of both Command and Blood Fury which lines up with Summon Infernal.
    • 20% reduced stun duration on you which can be useful in some situations.
  • Spatial Rift -- Void Elf
    • Spawn a shadow traveling into your facing direction, and activate it again to teleport to it.
    • Maximum range of 100 yards.

Recommendation

In general, it's safe to say that if you care about min-maxing your DPS, you should go with the highest DPS racial. That being said, the story is a bit different if it's about progression raiding. Some help out massively to speed up the progression on certain bosses. Notably, Dwarf with their Stoneform helped out on Tindral Sageswift and Fyrakk the Blazing in the latest Race to World First by having easy access to dispelling yourself at crucial points of the fights mentioned.
