11.0 - The War Within

Welcome to theBrewmaster Monk Mythic+ guide for World of Warcraft patch 11.0! Here you are going to find tips and tricks for your survivability and damage so you are never going to deplete again (hopefully). Below you find a quick overview of what the class is about.

Brewmaster Monk gameplay is about these 3 core features of the class Brews, Stagger, and your main resource Energy. Enegery is used to reduce the cooldown of your brews while brews reduce the amount of Stagger you have. These 3 things working together are important for your damage and survivability.

The most important mechanic for Brewmaster Monk is Stagger. Good management of Stagger and making good use of your brews is the key to your survivability.

Whether you are new to the Brewmaster Monk or are looking for tips and tricks, this guide provides you with the basics and includes a specially tailored section for every single dungeon with talent builds, boss, and trash tips.

Mobility

Strong

  • Brewmaster Monks damage mitigation is quite unique due to the Stagger mechanic.
  • Ring of Peace and Tiger's Lust, provide a niche but often times undervalued in a lot of fights.
  • In Mythic+ dungeons, Brewmaster Monks bring a lot of useful cc abilities to the group with Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace.
  • Brewmaster Monks damage is strong on ST, most of your damage comes from more sustained damage rather than burst damage. In AoE, your abilities Keg Smash and Breath of Fire contribute a lot more to the overall.
  • The main struggle for Brewmaster Monks is the amount of keybinds required to play the spec and the clunkiness of having so many.

Talents

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Brewmaster Monk

When to use this spec

This is the default loadout going into any boss unless specified otherwise. You have to adjust the class talent tree based on the utility needed for the encounter. To make your life easier, dungeon-specific talent loadouts are available in theDungeonssection.

Gameplay Altering Talents

Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation andDeep Divesections below.

Spec Tree

  • Shuffle
    • Shuffle doubles the effectiveness of Stagger.
  • Gift of the Ox
    • This spawns Healing Spheres when you take damage.
  • August Blessing
    • This talent is what makes crit so valuable, converting overhealing into a heal over time.
  • Sal'salabim's Strength
    • Enables a constant usage of Breath of Fire by getting the cooldown reset through Keg Smash.
  • Training of Niuzao
    • This provides you with nice mastery based on your stagger, one of the reasons mastery is not super high ranked in stat priority.
  • Shadowboxing Treads
    • Makes Blackout Kick cleave and ups its value by a lot.
  • Face Palm
    • Tiger Palm becomes way stronger and generates extra brew cooldown reduction
  • Charred Passions
    • With this, Breath of Fire empowers your Blackout Kick and Spinning Crane Kick.
  • Ox Stance
    • A buff that is generated while using your brews and consumed automatically by big hits.

Class Tree

  • Hasty Provocation
    • Provoke now increases the target’s movement speed by 50%.
  • Dance of the Wind
    • This is replacing Dampen Harm just giving you more base dodge, which is really nice for bigger target pulls.

Rotation

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Tier Set

  • (2pc):Breath of Firedeals 40% bonus damage as Shadowflame and causes you to heal for 50% of your Fire damage dealt.
  • (4pc): Your attacks against targets afflicted byBreath of Firehave a chance to deal 15% extra damage as Shadowflame, and eachCelestial Brewalso grants aStaggerabsorb for 100% of the Shadowflame damage you have dealt, causing damage delayed byStaggerto instead be prevented.

Opener

  • We want to gain a good amount of Shuffle through Keg Smash and Blackout Kick while also getting our debuffs rolling, This results in a somewhat spaced out opener weaving in a lot of spells.

Priority List

Make sure to keep this list in mind, unless some bosses or scenarios require you to hold some abilities listed here

  1. Use Touch of Death whenever possible
  2. Cast Blackout Kick on cooldown
    • If talented into Blackout Combo consume it with Tiger Palm
  3. Cast Keg Smash on cooldown
  4. Cast Breath of Fire on cooldown
  5. Cast Weapons of Order on cooldown
  6. Cast Rising Sun Kick on cooldown
  7. If talented, Chi Burst
  8. Cast Exploding Keg
  9. Cast Rushing Jade Wind
  10. Cast Tiger Palm

AoE Priority Changes

  • Blackout Combo is to be consumed with Breath of Fire on 3+ targets
  • Replace Tiger Palm with Spinning Crane Kick
    • Important tip here is to keep enough energy for Keg Smash since it has a higher value.
    • When casting Spinning Crane Kick casting more than once is most likely going to cost you too much energy so watch out!

Defensive Cooldowns

  • Celestial Brew
    • Provides big on-use absorb. This is your main defensive ability against tank hits.
    • The size of the absorb is increased by Purified Chi by up to 200%.
    • Gains cooldown reduction from Keg Smash and Tiger Palm.
  • Diffuse Magic
    • Your best tool against big magical hits. It offers a 60% magical damage reduction for 6 seconds.
    • This also self-dispels and, in certain cases, reflects the spell back to the caster.
  • Dampen Harm
    • Amazing tool for big hits and dots.
    • Offers a 20% to 50% damage reduction based on the hits taken, that's why it's quite strong against a big hit and weaker on a lot of small ones.
  • Fortifying Brew
    • Crazy long cooldown of 6 minutes that gets reduced by Keg Smash and Tiger Palm.
    • Gives 30% max HP and 30% damage reduction, which makes it overall your best allrounder defensive.
    • Used mainly against big hits and early on so the cooldown reduction can start working on getting it back.
  • Invoke Niuzao, the Black Ox
    • Used when your Stagger is particularly high since it suffers 25% of your Stagger damage instead of you.
  • Zen Meditation
    • With a 60% damage reduction this is your best tool against 1-time big hits.
    • The downside is that you can't move or use any ability without cancelling the spell.
    • Mainly used to soak a mechanic or tank a big dot while you are not getting actively hit.

Offensive Cooldowns

  • Weapons of Order
    • 10% increased Mastery and Keg Smash inflicts 8% increased damage taken for 10 seconds, stacking up to 4 times on the targets hit.
  • Exploding Keg
    • Causes melee attacks of targets hit to 100% miss you for 3 seconds.
    • Throw a keg that amplifies all your damage with bonus fire damage. Pair with Spinning Crane Kick on AoE.
  • Touch of Death
    • Clears up to 200% Stagger when cast Touch of Death, very good to cast on cooldown for damage or for defensive value.

Deep Dive

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Brewmaster Monk

Stagger

Brewmaster Monks rely on their Stagger mechanic to passively reduce the damage they take which is an essential part of their damage mitigation.

Stagger Phases

Your Stagger is split up into 3 different phases.

  • Light Stagger
    • Total Staggered damage amount is equal to 1-29% of your maximum health.
  • Moderate Stagger
    • Total Staggered damage amount is equal to 30-59% of your maximum health.
  • Heavy Stagger
    • Total Staggered damage amount is equal to 60% or more of your maximum health.

Using Purifying Brew cleanses 50% of the staggered damage thus reducing your Stagger phase and serving as your main mitigation ability. Purifying Brew is best used right after receiving a lot of damage to cut the Stagger damage in half.

Managing Celestial Brew & Purifying Brew

Juggling Celestial Brew & Purifying Brew is your main task and gameplay when it comes to your survivability on Brewmaster Monk.

  • Purifying Brew is your main tool to cleanse Stagger like described above.
    • Important to note: Purifying Brew is not on the global cooldown, so it can be pressed while using any other ability.
  • Celestial Brew is your defensive tool that is empowered by cleansing your Stagger.

Here are some tips and tricks on what to keep in mind when using them:

  • Purifying Brew has a few rules you wanna keep in mind when juggling your charges:
    • Avoid having both charges ready, you are wasting both defensive value and cooldown reduction value from your abilities.
    • Use a charge when your Purified Chi is about to expire you don't want to lose your absorb increase on Celestial Brew
    • Make sure you always get full cooldown reduction on this from Keg Smash, so if a second charge is about to come ready right before you press Keg Smash, use it.
  • General rule on when to use Purifying Brew the most efficient way:
    • After a big hit so you get the most Stagger value cleansed when it is new and at the highest point.
    • The other option is to almost fully cleanse yourself of any dangerous stagger after big hits, this is achieved by getting a very big stagger and then using 2 charges back to back.
  • Overall, if you follow a natural flow of gameplay, you should use it quite frequently just to avoid high stagger and not overcap charges.
  • The biggest mistake you can make is to use all charges all the time and then end up with none when the stagger becomes dangerous.
  • Celestial Brew is more straightforward to use:
    • It's your most frequent active defensive and should be used on most mechanics whenever possible.
    • Try to not hold it for too long since you are wasting cooldown reduction, which results in more damage taken in the long run.
    • However, you have to hold it for dangerous tank mechanics in certain scenarios, so keep that in mind.

Shuffle

Brewmaster Monks need Stagger to live any mechanic and what basically enables it is Shuffle.

  • Shuffle is passively generated by pressing Keg Smash, Spinning Crane Kick and Blackout Kick.
  • If you don't stop pressing buttons, Shuffle should never drop and you don't need to pay any attention to it. But there are some scenarios where the buff might run out:
    • When mechanics force you out of range and you are not able to reach the boss you might end up dropping it, resulting in a lot more damage taken so watch out for that!
    • Starting combat with Keg Smash and running in fast can result in death. Since Shuffle is triggered by the damage of Keg Smash and not the cast, if you are faster than the keg flying, you might get hit without Shuffle up and you die.

Blackout Combo

  • Blackout Combo provides you with a variety of options to empower your spells after using Blackout Kick, which happens very often so taking this talent makes it quite challenging to play well.
  • Blackout Combo has a number of buffs it can provide but only 2 of them are really worth using:
    • Tiger Palm, which gains 100% increased damage
    • Breath of Fire, which gains 50% increased damage and 5% additional damage reduction
  • The challenge of using Blackout Combo is that you always want to pair it with Tiger Palm. This is very easy to mess up since any other ability consumes Blackout Combo.
  • Using the buff on Keg Smash to gain extra 2 seconds of brew cooldown reduction is not the worst but not worth it most of the time.
  • Using the buff on Purifying Brew is almost entirely worthless.
  • In order to avoid wasting your Blackout Combo, you need to fill the time until your next Tiger Palm with abilities that deal good damage but don’t consume the Blackout Combo, such as Rising Sun Kick, Rushing Jade Wind, Spinning Crane Kick (watch your energy!), and Chi Burst.

Understanding Mechanics

Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

  • Pandemic
  • Spell Queue Window
  • Stat Diminishing Returns

Boss Tips

Hackclaw's War-Band

  • During Savage Charge make sure to soak the targeted player and press defensives as this really hurts. Celestial Brew is needed here.
  • Make sure to keep interrupting Earth Bolt.

Treemouth

  • Vine Whip is a really fast tank frontal that can be turned while casting. Make sure to aim it away from the team. Also it has a small knockback, so you need to walk or Roll back to the boss.
  • Use Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to control the Decaying Slimes that spawn from Decay Spray before they complete their Gushing Ooze cast.

Gutshot

  • Gut Shot hurts a lot and a defensive should be used (Celestial Brew) when tanking it, on top of that a small knockback happens.
  • Call Hyenas summons two Hyenas, which need to be picked up as a tank. Being close to them causes a Crippling Bite cast, this cast is quite deadly and should be stunned or outranged. If hit, press a defensive immediately.
    • As this is a bleed, both Stoneform and Cauterizing Flame can save your life.
  • Master's Call is being cast when a Hyena is in a trap, be ready to interrupt it.

Decatriarch Wratheye

  • Decaystrike puts a heavy heal absorb on you, be ready with your defensives on this mechanic.
    • Pre Celestial Brew is super strong here.
  • Choking Rotcloud is a boss frontal that you need to aim. After it goes out, the cloud travels clockwise through the room. KIeep this in mind when placing Rotburst Totem.
  • Rotburst Totem always spawns in the furthest away position from the boss. Keep this in mind when placing the boss in the room.
    • Save energy and damage for each totem if you can tank Decaystrike without using too much. Killing the totem is the most important part of the fight.

Trash Tips

  • Detox can be really helpful in this dungeon to dispel Withering on anyone.
  • Pack Tactics from Warscourge, Rotsinger, and Ranger cause enemies to do a lot more damage. Keep this in mind when playing large pulls with these enemies.
  • Use Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to stop Summon Lashers from Decayed Elders, this significantly reduces the damage your group takes.
  • Stop Vicious Clawmangle from Claw Fighters with any of your available stops.

Boss Tips

Magmatusk

  • During this boss, your main focus should be to make the fight easier for the rest of the group in terms of boss movement. You can to a large degree dictate where the Blazing Charge goes depending on the boss's position.

Chargath, Bane of Scales

  • Fiery Focus does a lot of damage and you should use defensives whenever this happens. On top of that, make sure to drag the boss through 3 chains one at a time to stun it and end the phase.
    • Due to the movement and ground swirls you have to dodge, making use of Celestial Brew whenever this phase starts and Diffuse Magic when needed is recommended.

Forgemaster Gorek

  • Heated Swings deals a lot of damage to you. Make sure to rotate your defensives accordingly for this mechanic. On top of that, at the end of the cast you are knockbacked. You want to get knockbacked to the same position the whole fight.
    • Watch out to not Roll back too fast – the boss might just leap on your position and kill you.

Warlord Sargha

  • Since the boss doesn't have a tank mechanic, your main objective is to pick up Piles of Gold to gain the weapons to break the Magma Shield.
    • Picking up gold gives you a curse which does not hurt too much as a tank.

Trash Tips

  • If you are fighting multiple Lava Flares you can cast Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to stop their casts since it makes them go on cooldown.
  • Keep an eye out for Qalashi Bonesplitter's Dragonbone Axe & Pierce Marrow and disrupt them.
  • Qalashi Wardens cast Blazing Slash on you which is one of the most deadly tank busters in M+, watch out for that.
  • Magma Fist is a frontal from Qalashi Trainee, so make sure to face them away from your group.
  • Reverberating Slam is another very deadly tank buster, be ready for it and make sure to use a defensive.

Boss Tips

Granyth

  • Nokhud Saboteurs are the spawned add that needs to be killed during the fight.
    • Make sure to use Disable if a slow is needed and Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to keep them in melee so they can be cleaved down.

The Raging Tempest

  • Energy Surge is an important mechanic to look out for, it buffs the boss to do magic damage with its melee swings if not purged.
    • If you have a purge class in your group, make sure to let them know you can't do anything against this.
    • In case you need to tank it, make sure to press a Celestial Brew or any other defensives. For the duration of this mechanic damage taken increases significantly.
  • Minmaxing Surge of Power stacks is very important since they don't only buff your damage but also healing making it easier to survive.
    • In most cases leave the stacks to the DPS players first since surviving this fight is normally not a big issue.
  • If you run out of melee range, the boss instantly casts Wind Burst which does very high magic damage. This means if you ever need to leave melee, press Diffuse Magic.

Teera and Maruuk

  • The most important part of your group's survival and your own is that you move the bosses together as fast as possible after every Spirit Leap. Otherwise the bosses receive a stacking damage buff from Ancestral Bond.
    • In some cases, it's unavoidable that the boss gets 1-2 stacks.
  • Brutalize is the main tank nuke coming from Maruuk, it deals a huge amount of physical damage to you.
    • Make sure to be ready with a Celestial Brew and at least 1 Purifying Brew for this hit
    • This mechanic can become quite hard because of the heavy movement this fight requires.

Balakar Khan

  • This fight is split into 2 phases with a changing tank mechanic that does a lot of damage in different ways:
  • Phase 1 the boss casts Rending Strike, a bleed that increases your damage taken from the next mechanic Savage Strike by 500%. This is by far the highest damage hit you are taking in this fight so make sure to start rolling defensive for each of these.
    • If you are a dwarf or have an evoker in your group you can utilize their bleed removal mechanics Cauterizing Flame and Stoneform to completely negate the 500% damage taken increase, making it deal almost no damage.
  • In Intermission make use of Ring of Peace to gather and Leg Sweep to stop the Storm Bolt casts of the adds.
  • Phase 2 the boss now casts Conductive Strike into Thunder Strike the same way the first phase does. The difference here is that now it’s magic damage and the debuff that increases damage taken can be dispelled, so make sure your healer dispels you here.
    • If possible, you should always try to Diffuse Magic the debuff back to the boss for a lot of extra damage.

Trash Tips

  • This Dungeon has a lot of mobs that need to be stopped to prevent casts from happening that wipe the group, so make sure to use Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to stop these enemies:
    • Nokhud Hornsounder Rally the Clan
    • Nokhud Beastmaster Hunt Prey
    • Desecrated Ohuna Rotting Wind
    • Risen Mystic Swift Wind
  • Primal Stormshields deal very high magic tank damage so try to make sure you have enough defensives ready when pulling multiple of them.
  • Unstable Squall casts Surge on whoever has aggro, it is important to instantly get aggro on this mob as Surge deals extremely high damage.
  • Ukhel Deathspeaker’s Chant of the Dead is a really long cast that buffs all undead enemies in its area. Make sure to move all the undead enemies out of itbefore it completes.

Boss Tips

Overgrown Ancient

  • This boss casts Barkbreaker, increasing your physical damage taken by 100% for 8 seconds. This mechanic is very deadly since it also works on the later spawned lashers in the fight.
    • Make sure to use any of your defensives when getting hit by this mechanic. Keep in mind it also does a decent amount of initial damage so pre-use your cooldowns.
  • You want to be stacked with the group while playing Germinate so the lashers adds spawn at the same positions.
  • When Burst Forth is cast, all dormant lashers wake up and attack players. It is crucial that you get aggro on all of these, so be ready with a Keg Smash and Spinning Crane Kick to pick them up.
    • These Lashers debuff you with Lasher Toxin which needs to get dispelled by your group members. If you can't, make sure to use slows and kite them if you are dying. This is especially important during the Barkbreaker debuff.
    • You should use Detox on cooldown to dispell yourself.
  • Having a target macro for the Ancient Branch to taunt it is recommended, as it can spawn a bit out of melee range and be quite hard to target in this fight.

Crawth

  • Savage Peck does heavy upfront tank damage and puts a big bleed on you. Generally, make sure to have Celestial Brew or any other defensive ready.
    • If you are a dwarf or have an evoker in your group you can utilize their bleed removal mechanics Cauterizing Flame and Stoneform to completely negate the mechanic and only take the initial damage.
  • Deafening Screech is the main magic damage mechanic happening every 25 seconds, use Diffuse Magic and Zen Meditation when the stacks go higher or you have Savage Peck.

Vexamus

  • This boss has a deadly tank frontal Arcane Expulsion, as this is magic damage use Celestial Brew for every single one.
  • Preferably you soak 2-3 Arcane Orbs on each rotation to make the fight easier for the rest of the group.
  • Around 2 minutes into the fight there is a deadly overlap of Mana Bomb + Arcane Fissure.

Echo of Doragosa

  • Move the boss when one area of the boss room gets too crowded with Arcane Rifts.
    • In the beginning of the fight he spawns 2 Arcane Rifts in the middle of the room, so bring the boss to the entrance area. These 2 pools despawn after 2 minutes into the fight.
  • Power Vacuum sucks you into the boss, simplyRoll out of it.

Trash Tips

  • In this dungeon, there are some very dangerous tank buster mechanics on the trash that you should be aware of and most of the time have a defensive ready for:
    • Guardian Sentry Storm Slash does very high magic damage
    • Eagle Peck stacks up a heavy ticking bleed
    • Spellbound Battleaxe Severing Slash big initial damage with a bleed after
  • The other dangerous part are the casts on the group, make sure to utilize your stopsLeg Sweep and Ring of Peace to the best of your ability:
    • Corrupted Manafiend Surge and Mana Void
    • Spellbound Scepter Mystic Blast big AoE cast needs to be stopped
    • Unruly Textbook Monotonous Lecture
    • Spectral Invoker Arcane Missiles

Pre Dungeon Start

  • You should always pick the Red Dragonflight Pledge Pin buff as it's numerically the highest value even though it's tempting to grab Bronze Dragonflight Pledge Pin.

Boss Tips

Watcher Irideus

  • Titanic Fist is a fast frontal cast that you want to aim away from the group and then dodge yourself. Apart from this, the fight does not do too much tank damage.
  • Utilize your Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace to stop Nullification Devices from casting Purifying Blast on your group.

Gulping Goliath

  • Make sure to keep all Curious Swoglets inside the Gulp and to stand in it yourself in order to not make the boss enraged.
    • Ring of Peace is very handy here.
    • Leg Sweep can also be used to stun them under the boss.

Khajin the Unyielding

  • This boss does a lot of group damage but every now and then it casts Frost Shock dealing high magic damage to you and slowing you.
    • Pre-use Celestial Brew before the timer to take less damage from this mechanic.
    • You can use Tiger's Lust to remove the slow on you after.
  • Make sure to move the boss close to the Ice Boulders to ensure melee uptime during Hailstorm casts.

Primal Tsunami

  • Squall Buffet + Focused Deluge are very hard hitting tank mechanics that are cast back to back.
    • Squall Buffet does high inital damage and knocks you back, use Roll or Transcendence to counter the knockback and Celestial Brew to survive the damage.
    • Afterwards, Focused Deluge is cast. This does less initial damage but way more over time. You can Zen Meditation this mechanic if needed.
  • When starting the intermission, use Ring of Peace to stack up 2 casters to make it easier to kill them. Ideally, you want to kick 1, then ring the closest one to the one you kicked, and let your team handle the last 2 casters.
  • In the Intermission make sure to stop Inundate with your Leg Sweep if needed.

Trash Tips

  • To minimize the chance of getting stunned by Cheap Shot from Skulking Zealots throw a Keg Smash on a close enemy or use Spinning Crane Kick moving in to break their stealth.
  • Glacial Proto-Dragons are very deadly for tanks with their Oceanic Breath. You should always use Celestial Brew if possible
    • Glacial Proto-Dragons are accompanied by Primalist Icecallers which cast Ice Shard on you. This spell is a deadly fast cast that can be disrupted so make use of your Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace but also ask your group for help since you are gonna be taking a lot of damage in these pulls.
  • Apart from these there are some more general stops/disrupts that are useful to keep an eye out for:
    • Refti Defender Demoralizing Shout
    • Primalist Shocktrooper Elemental Focus
    • Primalist Galesinger Thunderstrike

Boss Tips

Leymor

  • It can be difficult to pick up aggro on all the Bubbling Sapplings that spawn after Consuming Stomp. Make sure to haveRushing Jade Wind up and Keg Smash ready for this.
  • Infused Strike does an insane amount of damage to you and you should always have Celestial Brew ready for it.
  • Erupting Fissure is a high damage frontal
    • You can double Roll away from it while it's being cast to outrange it.
    • Erupting Fissure needs to be aimed at the Tress to clear them. Make sure to pick a good spot long before the cast happens since you want to position the boss properly.
  • Consuming Stomp does a decent amount of damage to you but overall should not be deadly.

Azureblade

  • Summon Draconic Image spawns Draconic Images that needs to be interrupted. Make sure to move the boss close to the spawned add every time.
  • Arcane Cleave is the main tank mechanic that is also a frontal cleave, it does a high amount of damage.
    • You can always Roll backward and never take damage from this mechanic if played correctly.

Telash Greywing

  • This boss does not really do anything special for tanks, the only dangerous part is the Absolute Zero since it drops you quite low, the boss then flies down and instantly attacks you. Consider using a defensive such as Celestial Brew at the last possible moment of the cast.
    • Also watch that your Shuffle might drop here

Umbrelskul

  • Dragon Strike is a very deadly tank mechanic.
    • You have to rotate through all your defensives on this boss fight and always have 1 charge of Purifying Brew ready.
    • Starting your defensive rotation with Celestial Brew is recommended since it has the shortest cooldown and the boss often goes afk.
  • To increase the odds that Detonating Crystals spawn stacked you can tank the boss on the edges of the room which basically removes half of the possible spawn locations.
    • The crystals spawn at 75%, 50%, and 25% boss hp.

Trash Tips

  • One of the important interrupts in this dungeon is Icy Bindings from the Rune Seal Keepers. If not interrupted, it causes a groupwide root which probably wipes you since during these pulls there are many ground mechanics to dodge.
    • This cast can be stopped by all of your AoE crowd control if necessary or kicks.
  • Crystal Furies cast Piercing Shards quite frequently which you can mostly tank during the start of a pull. Later on or when the stacks are too high you want to start stopping this cast with Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace + get help from your group.
  • Ice Cutter from both Vault Guards & Scalebane Lieutenant deals massive damage and should be respected. Utilize all your defensives on these pulls and if you are out of defensives, make sure to kite them as the range of Ice Cutter is not that big.
    • These packs are also accompanied by Rune Seal Keepers which inevitably cast Condensed Frost on you, it does a good amount of magic damage, keep that in mind when tanking them.
    • Ice Cutter can also be stopped by any stun or AoE stop such as Leg Sweep but the cast is quite fast.
  • Some other noteworthy adds that can/should be disrupted or stopped with Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace:
    • Conjured Lasher Mystic Vapors
    • Arcane Elemental Waking Bane
    • Nullmagic Hornswog Null Stomp

Boss Tips

The Lost Dwarves

  • Baelog is casting 2 spells that need to be aimed away from the group: Wild Cleave and Heavy Arrow.
  • Put Olaf on focus to quickly interrupt his ‍Defensive Bulwark when cast.

Bromach

  • After the boss casts Call of the Deep he summons 4 adds into the fight: 3 melee adds and 1 caster. Make sure to grab aggro on all these by running in with Rushing Jade Wind andKeg Smash. If needed, move to the caster add to get it into the middle of the room.
  • When Bromach summons a Quaking Totem you want to hit the totem to prevent a wipe, but at the same time you need to move all the adds into the totem circle so they get stunned by Tremor when the totem dies.

Sentinel Talondras

  • As a tank, your main job is to remove ‍Inexorable stacks from the boss with Resonating Orb on the ground to stop Titanic Empowerment with the last one in the end.

Emberon

  • Searing Clap is the main frontal mechanic. This does a lot of damage to you so make sure to use defensives on this. On top of that, it applies a debuff to the whole group. You can Diffuse Magic it and reflect the damage of the ability back to the boss.

Chrono-Lord Deios

  • Move the boss around the room to ensure the uptime of any melee DPS or to allow your group members to Line of Sight the ‍Wing Buffet.
    • You can help out your team here by casting Tiger's Lust on them when they can't get rid of their Time Sink
  • Sand Breath is another frontal boss mechanic and the same as Emberon it does a lot of damage to you make sure to rotate defensives here.

Trash Tips

  • Refti Custodian's are the main tank killers with their Jagged Bite. The bleed it applies is really dangerous and should be avoided by outranging the cast when it happens.
    • Over time they stack up Ancient Power increasing their damage. When stunned, they get a 50% damage increase from Systemic Vulnerability and reset their stacks. Make sure to use Leg Sweep and utilize your ‍group's stuns for that purpose.
  • Some other noteworthy adds that can/should be disrupted or stopped with Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace:
    • Vicious Basilisk Spiked Carapace
    • Stonevault Geomancer Chain Lightning
    • Earthen Weaver Hail of Stone
    • Earthen Warder Curse of Stone

Boss Tips

Melidrussa Chillworn

  • Frigid Shard is getting cast at you the whole time, it does a good amount of damage and you need to use a defensive when Chillstorm is going on.
    • Chillstorm sucks you towards its drop-off location and at the end does a bigger hit of dmg + a pushback, make sure to use Celestial Brew during this since the boss also casts Frigid Shard at you.
  • At 75% and 45%, Melidrussa spawns a lot of Infused Whelps. Make sure to meet these Whelps when they spawn to pick them up with Keg Smash and Rushing Jade Wind.

Kokia Blazehoof

  • Searing Blows is the tank combo happening every time after Ritual of Blazebinding, the effect of the tank combo can be dodged and parried so generally you should not be getting a lot of stacks from these.
    • If you do get hit, you are affected by Searing Wounds, which can be removed by Evokers Cauterizing Flame or Stoneform.
    • Celestial Brew is also recommended every time this combo happens.
  • To ensure as much time as possible between Blazebound Firestorms Inferno casts you should interrupt the first 2 Roaring Blazes early and the 3rd one late.

Erkhart Stormvein / Kyrakka

  • The initial hit of Stormslam is quite high so make sure to be ready with a defensive, on top of that you need to be dispelled after.
    • You can use Diffuse Magic to dispel yourself here if needed, most of the time you use this as a defensive.
  • Tank Erkhart Stormvein at the back of the room to ensure that Kyrakka always lands on the platform.

Trash Tips

  • Flame Dance from Primalist Flamedancers are the main tank killer, you need to disrupt this cast with Leg Sweep ,Ring of Peace and Paralysis. Also ask your team for help on these stops.
  • High Channeler Ryvati always prioritizes the tank with Shock Blast until you already have the debuff, and then he casts it on a random target in your group.
    • Shock Blast can be reflected back to the target with Diffuse Magic for big damage.
  • Some other noteworthy adds that should be disrupted or stopped with Leg Sweep and Ring of Peace are:
    • Flashfrost Earthshaper Tectonic Slam
    • Flashfrost Chillweaver Ice Shield
  • Important interrupts in this dungeon are:
    • Primalist Cinderweaver Cinderbolt
    • Flame Channeler Flashfire
    • High Channeler Ryvati Shock Blast
    • Tempest Channeler Thunder Bolt

Affixes

Learn how to effectively handle various Mythic+ Affixes as a Brewmaster Monk. Depending on the level of the Mythic+ Dungeon, you contend with up to two additional Affixes alongside Fortified and Tyrannical.

  • Storming
    • Transcendence: Transfer
      • Place down a Transcendence whenever you go into a pull where Storming could be lethal.
  • Entangling
    • Use Tiger's Lust.
  • Incorporeal
    • Use Paralysis.
  • Afflicted
    • Dispel with Detox.
  • Raging
    • On Raging make sure to keep in mind that when enemies are raging the chance that casts go off on you is way higher so be ready to use some defensives.
  • Bolstering
    • Bolster can be really dangerous for tanks since the melee swings + casts become deadly quite fast. Be ready to kite enemies with Ring of Peace.
  • Spiteful
    • Spiteful does not target you unless the fixated target dies, so you don't have to worry about their melee swings.
    • Supporting the team is your main job on this affix so make sure to use slows such as Ring of Peace and Leg Sweep.
  • Sanguine
    • Sanguine is really difficult to handle but if you are aware of adds dying just be ready to pre move and use Ring of Peace to get mobs out of the sanguine pools.
  • Bursting
    • Bursting is not too dangerous for a tank since it just does damage and not %HP damage to you, but if necessary you can dispel the stacks with Diffuse Magic.

Stat Priority

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Brewmaster Monk

Understand your secondary stat priority and the tertiary stats needed for optimal performance during Mythic + dungeons as a Brewmaster Monk. For more detailed information, visit the Stats and Attributes guide.

Higher Item level items are better in most scenarios. For an accurate representation of what item to equip you should use Simcraft! A static "Stat Priority" is just a starting point and can easily shift depending on your individual gear.

All secondary stats are affected by diminishing returns. Click here to learn more!

Tertiary

  • Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
  • Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing. The damage of your pets does not heal you, but most of our damage is coming from our own spells making Leech a great tertiary for us.
  • Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

In general Leech is really strong for tanks especially in AoE scenarios it can be by far the best stat you can have.
Avoidance is great but most of the times tanks are not struggling to survive the typical Area of Effect abilities

Trinkets

Trinkets come in two varieties: active and passive. Active trinkets require manual activation and inherit a cooldown providing a temporary boost to your output or survivability. On the other hand, passive trinkets provide a more consistent boost to your stats and abilities without requiring any actions.

Active Trinket alternatives

  • Treemouth's Festering Splinter
    • Another strong absorb trinket, not a bad pick but Rageheart is better.
  • Enduring Dreadplate
    • Very strong defensive trinket that also does big AoE damage.
  • Manic Grieftorch
    • The best on use-damage trinket you can get.
  • Storm-Eater's Boon
    • Very strong trinket for big AoE. Watch out as it roots you for its duration.
  • Ward of Faceless Ire
    • Decent absorb trinket with a 1 min cooldown, mainly used on tyrannical to give it out to your DPS players if they are dying to mechanics.

Passive Trinket alternatives

  • All-Totem of the Master
    • Decent passive trinket if you want to have a bit of everything, it procs damage, stats and armor at random every 30 seconds.
  • Augury of the Primal Flame
    • If you just want to do damage, best passive damage trinket.
  • Cataclysmic Signet Brand
    • Very strong damage trinket on super high tyrannical keys, even better if you can chain combat.

Embellishments

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Brewmaster Monk

  • Slimy Expulsion Boots
    • Reduce your haste by a small amount but deal a lot of damage with their effect.
  • Toxified Armor Patch
    • Increases the effects of Slimy Expulsion Boots by 100%.
    • Craft this on either Belt or Wrists, depending on what's weaker for you currently.

Remaining Sparks

  • Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped to keep your food buff even if you die.
  • Crafted items are 525 item level and regular items are 528 on max item level therefore it's not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your 2x embellishments unless you don't have access to other high item level gear on that slot.

Races

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Brewmaster Monk

For min-maxing a Brewmaster Monk in Mythic +, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.

  • Stoneform -- Dwarf
    • Is very valuable due to the fact that you can dispel yourself or remove dangerous bleed effects.
    • On top of that, using Stoneform gives you 10% physical DR which can be like a small extra defensive as a tank for 8 seconds.
    • Use-case examples:
      • Bursting stacks.
      • Searing Wounds, Kokia Blazehoof (Ruby Life Pools)
      • Primal Chill, Whelps (Ruby Life Pools)
      • Rending Strike and Conductive Strike, Balakar Khan (Nokhud Offensive)
      • Dragon Strike, Umbrelskul (Azure Vault)
      • Savage Peck, Crawth (Algeth'ar Academy)
      • Splinterbark, Overgrown Ancient (Algeth'ar Academy)
      • Gushing Wound, Refti Defender (Halls of Infusion)
      • Deep Chill, Glacial Proto-Dragons (Halls of Infusion)
      • Withering, Fetid Rotsingers and Brackenhide Shapers (Brackenhide Hollow)
      • Crippling Bite, Gutshot Hyena (Brackenhide Hollow)
      • Chomp, Vicious Basilisk (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr)
      • Jagged Bite, Refti Custodian (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr)
      • Stolen Time, Infinite Timereavers (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr)
  • Shadowmeld -- Night Elf
    • Can be very useful when doing any kind of skip in Mythic+
    • Run past basically any mob and then cast Shadowmeld to make them reset. Even works on mobs that have stealth detection if you get enough distance before you Shadowmeld
  • Rocket Jump -- Goblin
    • Do a small jump in the direction your character is facing.
    • While you're in the Rocket Jump animation you are placed on a global cooldown until your character lands.
  • Arcane Torrent -- Blood Elf
    • Strong racial to dispel or purge enemies, the value is very limited but sometimes can come in handy.
  • Spatial Rift -- Void Elf
    • Spawn a shadow traveling into your facing direction, activate again to teleport to it.
    • Maximum range of 100 yards.

Recommendation

As tank picking a racial for damage is most of the times such a small gain that it's not worth it. If you care about min-maxing your DPS go with the highest DPS racial.
That being said the recommended race for Mythic+ is either Night Elf or Dwarf both offer unique features one being more tactical with Night Elf skips and the other being more reliable when it comes to your survivability.
