Probably too much things to do on one go since the game is been going on for 10 years.
Maybe play the free campaign first before thinking of expansions and you'll see if it's even for you while doing that

The base game is a terrible representation of the game. The QoL improvements all the expansions provide are good reason to go straight into Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire

They're desperate for cash, hence why they release a 30 dollar bikini set. Everyone in game bought it

It pisses me off they held out all of these for year simply because the SJW in Washington are really that spiteful, and it require a massive layoff by Ncsoft and a gun at there head, my Ncsoft again, to get any thing done. These are all too little, too late for me.

It's good and the community is nice and helpful. But yeah it must feel absolutely overwhelming to a new player right now.
That said if you play if for free and enjoy you first few days you'll regret not buying the expansions that aren't on sale very often. It's not just new maps and stories, it's new classe specializations, mounts, new mechanics, etc.

The next expansion that'll release in august will add player housing and there's a lot of hype around it. It might be a really good time to get into GW2.

Very comfy casual MMO. If you're looking for lot's of instanced content like raids and a big community around them you may be disappointed. The game's specialty so to speak is basically big world bosses and "meta-events". The maps are overall really nice, fun to explore. Lots of jumping puzzle, great mounts, a good amount of build variety and agency. No subscription and no gear treadmill, if you want to take a break you can come back at literally any time and get right into actually playing the game. You can level up literally just by checking out vistas, points of interest and general map exploration (ie it's pretty good at rewarding you for playing however you want).
All that said.. The playerbase is seriously moronic and kinda unbelievably bad at the game. The expansion/"living world" split of content is kind of annoying and will cost quite a bit to purchase it all (living world can be bought with gold though), and the game really pushes you to buy a lot of character and account upgrades to be comfortable (inventory slots, bank expansions, infinite salvage and gathering tools, etc). All that stuff (and skins etc) can also be bought with gold too though.

      /thread
It's the only MMO I've played where the rewards and progression respect the time I've put into the game 1:1. It's good enough for it to be in my long "rotation" of games..

As a returning player who quite before the release of PoF. It's pretty tedious. A lot of maps are dead unless the map meta event is going on which makes getting collections done a pain. In GW2 it's less grinding one spot or boss and more about doing chores all over the world. It is incredibly time gated and daily heavy.

With that being said. It might be the only MMO on the market that respects your time. Getting geared at level 80 is easy enough you can get several characters going for cheap. Ascended gear has only gotten easier to get and Legendary gear ( QoL gear) is becoming more common for casual players.

Story is complete and utter sh*t.

you know very well how's it's doing. it's not. it's a dying game that has been on a downwards spiral since the third expansion. GW3 is a few years away, so just wait for that.

The best time I had with this game was grinding HoT meta maps. I had a real blast with the final map in the season one living story, too, but even though I'd been playing the game on and off before then, that was the first time I was playing regularly, so I had no idea what the frick was going on in the story, and why Lion's Arch was under attack. But yeah, HoT was the peak of the game and it was downhill from there.

since its free id say yes, play it. the game 100% respects your time, you can play it for 15min or 10 hours and always have something to do but never feel forced to do any of it which is great
many people mention gearing is easy, thats because GW2 doesnt have linear progression and that is something they said since launch they want to avoid, which is great, since you arent cucked by RNG and mindless grinding, you get to 80 and you can play the game pretty much like everyone else, if you want linear progression you can do Fractals, which is a 5man dungeon content with hard modes
there are also raids and new one is coming with the xpack, there are also strike missions which are also 10man content somewhere between dungeons and raids in terms of difficulty(not counting the hardmodes/CMs)
also morons are saying maps are dead which is absolutely not true, especially on EU
if you are a braindead moron that constantly needs to be told what to do and where to go and what to farm, go play WoW. GW2 is a fun social game, what mmorpgs should be, not some minmaxing autism, that constantly requires you to wait for devs to release new content, plus all content in GW2 is viable at any level as well

      kys projecting troony

It's boring. There's no sense of gear progression because you can buy the best set of equipment for dirt cheap as soon as you reach max level. From that point all you do is spend ten hours a day grinding out what is effectively reputation just so you have access to basic game features that expansion zones are built around.

The amusing part is that the most efficient way(meaning the way 90% of the playerbase does it) is by following trains around where you'll have players bypassing obstacles for you with teleports. Meaning that you'll have zero sense of accomplishment or progression because you spent the past few weeks skipping all the roadblocks you're grinding to be able to skip. It's a wonderful system.

The beetle is great, I lucked out and met a lad ingame who shelled out immense money for racing medallions so my primary income became doing beetle races like a baller and selling them to him, probably the best time I had in the game when I had actual income and not just bits and pieces from PvP and WvW boxes. The beetle still does not justify playing this horrendous game.

I distinctly remember the Skyscale map being the one I gave up on the game. That's when it really hit me like a slap to the face that the content of the game was just going to the new map, and grinding for the new map currency to buy whatever it was they were trying to sell you. I think I checked out the first update of the Icebrood saga, but when I say I checked it out extremely briefly I mean it. I just didn't care about the game anymore, and I haven't touched it since.

That was a good time to quit, actually. You saw the writing on the wall just in time. I kept trudging through foolishly giving it the benefit of the doubt all the way through Icebrood and until the Marionette got added back. Then I got banned for 2 weeks for saying how pathetic it was that they literally FLATtened her breasts and ass and that the responsible dev can go frick herself, and I realized that there is nothing left. Waaaaay too long, but I managed to reach that epiphany finally.

you have to realize GW2 is not a traditional MMO so dungeons serve little purpose since they arent really used for gearing, you should focus on fractals, strike missions or maybe even raids, get gold, craft ascended or legendary gear and just enjoy the content the game has, you aren't supposed to chase items or depend on rng

Stellar map design and environmental storytelling, cool class/subclass identity with free respec anytime and anywhere, decent fashion options and an open world PvP mode that's pretty unique.
    On the other hand...
Story is Marvel-tier and the devs prioritise it over everything else, lots of QoL missing even compared to the first game, combat could be cool but most PvE content is extremely dull, including instanced.
Also the monetisation model is deliberately obtuse to get money from you: once you buy an expansion, you have to buy the second half of it separately (called "living world") but you can actually unlock it via the in-game currency by simply playing the game, maybe farming a bit here and there.

My advice is to get the first expansion since it's a 2-pack and includes the second one as well (Heart of Thorns + Path of Fire). This way, for about 7.50 bucks you get
    >raids
    >ninth class (revenant)
    >two subclasses for every class
    >gliding + six mounts
    >nine maps, of which three are good and five are pretty
If you like it enough, you can keep playing and get the living world stuff that will give you
    >strikes (shorter raids)
    >two more mounts
    >a way to unlock several legendary weapons and accessories
    >15 more maps, including two very good farming ones

Disclaimer: I hopped off with the last expansion, Secrets of the Obscure, because it was a rip-off, but it's pretty much a requirement if you're invested in the game since it adds some lucrative prizes to the game's battle pass.

Dont bother, I made the mistake during spring sale and returned to the game after years long break.
The base game is good for just chilling, exploration and doing random events. There are also still people doing events at all levels so its not too bad in that sense.
Expansions will make you go through instanced singleplayer dogsh*t content to progress - and they never learned from those mistakes. Most of it is horribly written and annoying.

If you really want to try it Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire are okay enough to explore (not counting the story sh*t). Never ever buy anything more than that, especially the asian themed expansion.

The expansions feel like a entirely different game compared to vanilla and dont be fooled by secrets of the obscure and Janthir wilds, they arent really expansions they are just living story being sold as one.

Don't waste your time with it at all. The economy is utterly fricked, the only real endgame goal is grinding for legendaries, combat is largely braindead outside of a few classes that do ten times the work for the same output as a class that literally just autoattacks, endgame content is either braindead, dead as frick, or stupidly elitist (which loops back to being dead as frick), and 99% of players will be in obnoxiously ostentatious cash shop gear

No!!!!! Not the cash shop gear in a game where your 10 y/o gear is still relevant today.

The aesthetics of the game are fricked beyond repair because of the ugly cash shop gear, was the main point there

I don't know if there is a game or two that is similar that doesn't have that issue unfortunately.

tbh End of Dragons isn't all that bad. The maps are sh*t, the content is braindead with one exception, the story looks like a parody (even if you ignore the obvious sh*t like "beat up the bigot" and "your mostly friendly agender engineer") and the fashion is mediocre at best, but you do get to play with nine new elite specs, you get a jade bot that boosts your drop rates/movement and doesn't clutter the screen, you get two novelty mounts for up to five people and there's a fishing minigame that's not complete garbage. It's a good pick up for $15, at least.

          More like
          >it's complete sh*t but there's classes to unlock and some meme sh*t to do like sailing and fishing so it's at least a decent buy when on sale
Also, fishing is exponentially less braindead than anything introduced in SotO.

If at least fishing would feel enjoyable like in real life. In games it's tedious.

WvW and to an extent the instanced pvp are the only good parts of the game.
PvE content has been so heavily farmed out by skinner boxed spastics that its overwhelming for anyone getting into it, and it only really amounts to optimizing farming for specific aesthetic choices. I thought it was funny once to join a "progression group" that would go through all the raid content at a learning pace, but it amounted to basically a newbie larp. Just watch the videos we post in discord and do your rotation, its super easy :). PvE in mmo's is not fun anymore because people dont see it as an actual challenge 9/10 it isn't a challenge, they just see it as a the time cost for the rewards associated with the content and do their absolute best to optimize the fun out of it.

A problem I see with trying to figure out a boss from scratch instead of looking at guides is you have to have a pureblooded 100% newbie group for all of them to have fun. I remember going into wing 4 with a fresh group and after we beat the frozen turd we got to the chess field and I had to bounce because they wanted to figure the mechanics out themselves and I only had enough time to try if I already explained it to them. It's not really particulalry engaging to watch others learn the things you know.

I played this but I've never got past lvl20-30 stage
I don't know why because It's better and more fluid than most of the MMOs I've played
Graphics are great, art style is cool, sounds is ok, exploration is cool, quests seem alright but there's just something that keeps me from playing it seriously. I don't know what it is.
I've tried 3 different toons, with different classes but it's always the same

I have 2k+ hours played over 7 years, it has some of the best open world pve (in my opinion) and THE best mount system of any mmo.
Its both casual and hardcore and you don't feel punished if you don't grind, with the exception of the mounts, you definitely want all of them and the griffon and skyscale are grindy.
That being said, there isn't a huge end game gear progression like others mentioned, ascended gear will get you through everything and crafting legendaries can be very time consuming and is more for convenience and fashion than raw power.
I say try it out, get a character to 80 and do some end game, if you enjoy that then get at least path of fire for mounts.

How is this game these days, worth getting into? A lot of the expansions are dirt cheap for Summer Sale (2024)
