Why investors should skip Invesco QQQ?
QQQ usually declines more in bear markets, has high sector risk, often appears overvalued, and holds no small-cap stocks.
The price-to-earnings ratio of the average company in the Invesco QQQ Trust is 34.4. That's on the expensive side. However, I still believe it's smart to consider investing. Valuation doesn't matter as much if you have a long time horizon.
First, VOO has a clear advantage in terms of expense ratio. VOO's expense ratio is 0.03% compared to 0.20% of QQQ, which is more than three times cheaper. Next is diversification. While both ETFs are well diversified, VOO is less concentrated in both industry and top 10 holdings.
The benefits of investing in QQQQ include exposure to a diversified portfolio of large-cap growth companies, low expenses, and the ability to trade the ETF like a stock throughout the trading day.
As of April 3, 2023, QQQ has outperformed SPY in terms of long-term performance (1 year and more). On a 1-3 month horizon, SPY leads. However, this does not mean that SPY is better suited for short-term investments.
The QQQ ETF offers buy-and-hold investors low expenses and long-term growth potential with enough diversification to avoid the risks of betting on one company. On the downside, long-term investors in QQQ must deal with sector risk, possible overvaluation, and the absence of small caps.
5-star Morningstar rating
As of December 31, 2023, Invesco QQQ had an overall rating of 5 stars out of 1118 large-cap growth funds for a 10-year period, based on risk-adjusted return.
The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ -1.11%) is one of the most popular exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the market with just under $200 billion in assets under management. As an ETF that tracks the performance of the Nasdaq-100 index, it has delivered some of the best long-term returns since it came into existence in 1999.
Invesco QQQ (QQQ) has a higher volatility of 3.98% compared to SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) at 3.16%. This indicates that QQQ's price experiences larger fluctuations and is considered to be riskier than SPY based on this measure. The chart below showcases a comparison of their rolling one-month volatility.

QQQ is the ticker symbol for the most popular Nasdaq 100 index ETF [1]. The reason it was assigned this ticker symbol is because QQQ is a derivative of the term Cubes. This was modified to 'Qubes' and further abbreviated to three Qs.

8 | GOOG | Alphabet Inc. |
9 | COST | Costco Wholesale Corporation |

The CAGR returns have been in the range of 23-40%. The significantly higher allocation towards FAANG stocks has ensured that Nasdaq 100 has outperformed S&P 500 index by a wide margin.
For 2024, the S&P 500 is forecast to deliver EPS growth of 11.7%, solidly above the 10-year average of 8.4%. QQQ and QQQM follow the Nasdaq-100 Index. That benchmark has a long history of delivering EPS growth well in excess of the S&P 500.
QQQ is considered an aggressive growth investment, with higher short-term volatility than the S&P 500, which invests in companies in a more evenly distributed range of industries.
