Ripon high jumper is bound for state (2024)

DAVIS — Ripon sophom*ore Clara Schoolland punched her ticket to the state meet, and Lathrop’s Adonis Siga is well positioned for a return trip to Clovis.

They were among the top performers from the area on day 1 of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships held Friday at Davis Senior High.

The top three placers and others hitting at-large qualifying marks advance to the 104th California Interscholastic Federation State Championships on May 24-25 at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Schoolland made it in the high jump, finishing as the runner-up. She matched her personal record of 5 feet, 4 inches, which is also the school record.

“I’m really excited to go, it’s a big accomplishment,” she said. “I was worried about this meet, because freshman year I came and missed the starting height. This year, to get second is redemption.”

Schoolland was able to clear the first three heights — 5-00, 5-02, 5-04 — on the first attempts and was one of the last two competitors left standing. St. Mary’s Fekei George, also a sophom*ore, clinched the title by clearing 5-05 on the second try.

“My coach and I changed up my steps right before this meet and it really helped,” Schoolland said.

Half of the field events occurred on Friday. The girls pole vault, boys high jump, girls discus throw, girls long jump, boys shot put and boys long jump take place today along with the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

Three area competitors made it to the finals of their field events on Friday but came up just short of a state bid.

Manteca senior Genesis Mailangi started well in the shot put with a toss of 37-08 ¾, but she was unable to improve on that mark and finished in fifth place.

“Honestly, I feel like I could have done better,” Mailangi said. “I have discus tomorrow, and I’ll just move onto the next.”

Sierra’s Anthony Grady took sixth in the triple jump, hitting 44-03 on his sixth and final attempt. Marcus Madoski of Ripon placed eighth in the event, topping out at 43-00.

On the track, area schools shined in the hurdles and relays. The top eight — heat winners and next fastest times — from the preliminaries move onto today’s final races.

Siga won his heats in both hurdle events, clocking the third fastest time in the 110 (14.70 seconds) and second in the 300 hurdles (38.94). He reached the state meet in the 300 hurdles last year.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Siga said. “Didn’t PR (set a personal record) or anything, but they felt like good races. The wind is my enemy, but I fought through it.”

Ripon junior Starla Skiles set a new PR in the 100 hurdles (14.56) for a second straight week and is seeded fifth for the finals. She also won her heat in the 300 hurdles (45.59), finishing third overall.

the hurdles. Alexandra took eighth in the 100 hurdles (15.78), and Abigail was fifth in the 300 (46.30).

Manteca’s boys 4x400 of Isaiah Arechiga, Jayden Scarver, Dario Rodriguez and Julian Moncada blazed their way to the top time of 3 minutes, 20.95 seconds. It’s also the second fastest time run in the SJS all season and is only 1.04 seconds away from the at-large mark.

Scarver will also be competing in the 400 finals after winning his heat and turning in the second-best time of 49.89.

Moncada took 10th in the 100 prelims (11.22) and will not return to the final in the event after making it as a sophom*ore.

East Union’s boys 4x100 improved on its school-record time (42.33) and is seeded fifth for the final. The Lancers’ young quartet consists of sophom*ore J.P. Abrew and Jackson Fay and juniors Anthony Morales and Cesar Salinas. Fay also ran in the 100 trials, taking 19th (11.40).
