How To Get & Use The Strange Chunk of Amber In Baldur’s Gate 3 (2024)

Among the plethora of mysterious and elusive objects that players encounter and pick up in Baldur's Gate 3, the Strange Chunk of Amber found in Act 1 often leaves many players puzzled about its purpose. This item is typically stumbled upon rather than actively sought out, primarily because it appears to be useless at first glance.

However, beneath its mundane exterior, the Strange Chunk of Amber holds secrets crucial to uncovering a legendary weapon, a lost relic hinted at within this segment of Act 1. Players who delve deeper into the lore and mysteries of Baldur's Gate 3 will find that this seemingly insignificant item is a key piece of a larger puzzle.

Where To Find The Strange Chunk Of Amber In Baldur's Gate 3

Crèche Y'llek, The Githyanki Base

The Strange Chunk of Amber is located in a display case within the Inquisitor’s Room inside Crech Y’llek, beneath the Rosymorn Monastery. Reaching the Githyanke Crèche is a significant part of the main quest in Baldur's Gate 3, accessible by navigating through the Mountain Pass on your journey to Act 2.

While the Mountain Pass serves as one of the routes to the Shadow-Cursed Lands, you have the option to explore the Underdark as an alternative path to Act 2, ensuring you don't miss any content. As long as you refrain from progressing into Act 2, you can freely fast-travel between Waypoints within the Mountain Pass, the Underdark, and the remaining areas of Act 1.

Reach The Mountain Pass

To reach the Mountain Pass, you can either head east from the Goblin Camp or take the stone bridge west of the Risen Road Waypoint. Alternatively, the nearest Waypoint is Waukeen's Rest, located near the burning house on the western side of the map. From Waukeen's Rest, turn right and head northeast along the trail, passing a wheelbarrow on the left.

Directly ahead, you'll encounter the Githyanke patrol, part of a BG3 quest, where a red dragon in Baldur's Gate 3 stands by the bridge. Players can avoid one of Act 1's toughest fights by selecting the optimal dialogue options, which you can follow in DaveAsp81's visual guide. Alternatively, engage the Githyanki warriors in battle.

These enemies are fast and formidable, often using Misty Step to reposition and strike close to players. To handle them effectively, spread your party out, ideally in pairs, to support each other in case any companions fall and need assistance. Utilize the bridge above for ranged attacks, and position a stealth character like Astarion unseen, for devastating sneak attacks.

After either navigating the dialogue or defeating the Githyanke Patrol, players can cross the bridge. Pass through the archway into the Mountain Pass to open up this new area for exploration, updating the new map.

Enter Rosymorn Monastery

To reach the Monastery, follow the signposts that guide you to a cable car wheel. Use your strongest character, such as Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3, to pass a Strength Check and turn the wheel, bringing a wooden platform to carry you and your party across to the other side.

After arriving, head west from the cable car wheel until you reach another signpost. Continue westward, and you will spot the Ancient Sigil Circle Waypoint. From there, proceed to the Rosymorn Monastery.

As you approach the entrance, you will notice raiders outside the monastery. Once they leave, you can explore the exterior freely. However, you will find that the Monastery doors are locked and players cannot use lockpicking in Baldur's Gate 3. Instead, sneak into the broken window to your left and defeat the horde of drunk Kobold Scouts inside.

Utilize the flammable wine-filled barrels to your advantage by shooting at them from outside the room, causing a catastrophic explosion to quickly finish the fight.

Enter Crèche Y'llek

After defeating the Kobolds, continue forward and jump to the next cliff. Upon reaching the summit, descend onto the monastery. There, you will find a staircase and a talking statue. Continue downward to encounter a barricade that must be broken through. From here, descend the next set of stairs leading to the basem*nt, granting access to the Githyanki Crèche.

Upon entering the Crèche, you will be greeted by some raiders who will engage you in conversation. It's crucial to avoid combat here, as fighting would involve taking on the entire Crèche. The best approach is to have Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3 as your party dialogue leader, allowing her to converse with the soldiers and prevent any conflicts.

If Lae'zel is not in your party, you will have to fight your way through and clear the entire Crèche, which is no easy feat.

Steal The Strange Chunk of Amber

To locate the Strange Chunk of Amber, start at the entrance and proceed north, following the path to the right of the Waypoint. This will bring you to the Captain's Quarters, where Kith'rak Therezzyn will confront you about the artifact you carry.

The simplest way to handle this situation is to hand over the Artifact. It will be promptly returned to you, and Kith'rak Therezzyn will unlock the door to the Inquisitor's Chamber, allowing you to enter.

Inside the Inquisitor's Room, turn left to discover a small area with a Display Case and some chests. Fortunately, this section is outside the Githyanki's' line of sight and can be safely looted by crouching with a stealthy character like Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3.

Open the Display Case to find the Strange Chunk of Amber along with the Hoarfrost Boots. This is a useful item that allows the wearer to never fall Prone while navigating icy terrain.

How To Get & Use The Strange Chunk of Amber In Baldur’s Gate 3 (3)

When you pick up the Strange Chunk of Amber, you'll quickly realize that it is a miscellaneous item with no gameplay utility. It is a poor replica of the Blood of Lathander, lacking any abilities, and intended to deceive adventurers seeking the legendary weapon in Baldur's Gate 3.

Despite this, it holds some significance as the 'Find the Blood of Lathander' quest entry in your journal will update to:

A fake artifact in Rosymorn Monastery was disguised as the Blood of Lathander - we should keep looking for the true relic.

Handing it to someone with high Religion proficiency, such as Shadowheart, will reveal more information and the location of the puzzle room. Conveniently, the puzzle leading to the real legendary weapon is right in front of where you find the Strange Chunk of Amber, marked by two stone statues facing each other.

Solving the statue puzzle will uncover a hidden path to the true Blood of Lathander in Baldur's Gate 3. Beyond this, the Strange Chunk of Amber has no additional value and can be sold to merchants for 55 Gold, provided you have a high Charisma stat; otherwise, it will fetch a lower price. Alternatively, players can keep it as a memento of their time in the Crèche.
